Whimsical Soul

Planet Awesome Kid loves an illustration!

One of our new favorites is Vicky Scott in the UK!

Her work is whimsical, positive and full of life!

Vicky Scott is a freelance illustrator based in South East London, where she lives with her boyfriend Chris and a lot of coloured paper! In 2004 she graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA Hons in Illustration. Since graduation she has worked for numerous greetings card publishers, as well as designing logos, t shirts, book covers and fine art pieces.

Vicky’s work is inspired by the 1920’s, fashion, found images, humour, psychedelic 60’s art and often just pure fantasy. Her style is characterized by her use of silhouettes, organic forms (and cute animals!) and always has an uplifting feel. She works with a mixture of traditional paints, paper collage and fabric as well as Photoshop and Illustrator.

We asked Vicky about her work and inspiration and this is what she told us:

I’m inspired by artists from before I was born, like Aubrey Beardsley, Erte and Andy Warhol, but I also love Catalina Estrada’s beautifully detailed illustrations.

I like to think of my pictures as a lighthearted look on the world (often from a female perspective) and they are set in a strange place somewhere in between the 1920′s and an idealized version of the present day. I like all my pieces to tell a story and for the viewer to get find more details the longer they look at a piece, like with my picture Rabbitland where even the birds in the trees and bees are actually rabbits! Apart from my influences I don’t really go out and research something and base a picture on it, I just tend to be doodling away and end up drawing something I like and go from there.

My current project is painting a mural design onto a life-size model of a baby elephant that will be exhibited in London as part of the elephant parade.

Thanks for the lovely feedback! I’ve got all those designs as prints rather than posters in my etsy shop.
